Proloquo is a multilingual speech and communication solution for Mac OS X that provides: a full-fledged communication system (AAC) for people who cannot speak, speech feedback in any application while typing for children and people with learning disabilities. McLeod shared an anecdote about being awestruck by a VoiceOver demo he received a few years ago from Workflow developer Conrad Kramer. "I still vividly remember sitting in his living room and having this mouth-open moment when I put together how you could still use apps with the screen off [via VoiceOver’s Screen Curtain feature]," he said. McLeod added that this experience, amongst others, helped him see the big picture around accessibility. He soon realized accessibility isn’t just about servicing a specific group; it’s about making Blackbox a better game for everyone, regardless of ability. AssistiveWare develops assistive technology software for iOS and Mac OS, creating applications for people with physical, vision, communication and reading impairments.

10. Now to onto the iPad and open Proloquo2Go on the iPad. Choose the gear tool in the bottom right-hand bar to get into 'options'. If the gear tool is not lit up, then it means it has been hidden. To get into 'options' do the out Proloquo2Go.

This app is extremely versatile. You can use a library of pictures, take pictures from within the app, and even choose photos from your device’s album. There are multiple voices avail which you can customize the characteristics of each. You can make it as simple or complex as you want. We started with just a few icons for our cognitively disabled son and gradually increased the grid to (currently) like 6x8 grid of icons. He knows it’s layout better than we do.

Another notable indie app that does well by accessibility is The Iconfactory’s venerable Twitter client, Twitterrific.
